The ban of hunting with hounds in England is about political prejudice in a democracy, not about animal welfare. The Labor Government’s Minister for Rural Affairs, Alun Michael, stated publicly on BBC Sept. 16 that the bill was for party management rather than animal welfare. Michael previously assured countryside people that the government would deal with hunting on the basis of principle and evidence.
The scientific evidence gathered in a government-funded study supports hunting with hounds as more humane than other means available to control overabundant fox populations in Great Britain. Countless jobs, businesses and social benefits to the people living in rural England are also at stake.
