At about age six I was a
neighbor to Bobby. My brother and I started going to his house to watch television because his family had a TV and electricity, neither of which we had.
Times were hard then so family and neighbors meant everything. We would watch television until bedtime. We mostly watched western shows.
As time went on I became a permanent fixture at the Fincham home. I spent most of my time there. I often wondered why Bobby’s parents didn’t ask me to come less often but I honestly believe they didn’t realize I wasn’t part of the family.
Bobby was 11 years older than me so you can imagine how I looked up to him. As a kid I really believed if he wanted to, he could walk on water.
Bobby worked on a farm and during the day I would play with his sister, Helen. We were very close. As soon as Bobby got home from work he would get his 22 rifle and go hunting. Helen would become a memory because my hero wasn’t going hunting without me. Hunting in those days'was not only for pleasure but also for food. It was a way of life. As I got older, he taught me to groundhog, squirrel, rabbit, and our favorite deer hunt. There is not a hill or mountain in Old Hollow that we haven’t hunted at one time or another.
