The Dulles volunteers fielded 11,000 requests for information from Wednesday through Sunday of the Thanksgiving holiday, said DeHaven. By the end of this year, they will have assisted 500,000 travelers and their relatives.
More volunteers are always welcome, said DeHaven. She could use more people for weekday evenings and on weekends. The desks are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends. Volunteers contribute one three- or four-hour shift per week, and are paired with the same partner. They rotate around the three airport stations.
Language misunderstandings can lead to some of the most serious problems. DeHaven recalled helping a man waiting for his two teenage daughters to arrive from Ghana. They never showed up. Inquiries to customs were fruitless.
“We finally got someone from the airline to speak to us, They were on a flight to Dallas” — rather than Dulles - said DeHaven. “Thankfully, there is a Travelers Aid office there. We worked with them, they met the girls and got them back here to their father.”
