Caroline had the inspiration for Hopewell Baptist Church. Caroline organized a meeting with the other former slaves in which they talked about forming a church of their own.
Mr. Russell told how the Masonic Lodge also played a part in the later history of Hopewell Baptist. In 1881. there was a Masonic Lodge on Main Street in Sperryville. In later years, when the lodge merged with the lodges in Flint Hill and Washington, the building in Sperryville was torn down and the building materials were given to the black community to use in the construction of Hopewell Baptist Church.
More of Mr. Russell’s stories will appear in next week’s column.
