Rappahannock News Staff Writer
The National Park Service recently added a new Rappahannock County historic district and a well-known local property to the National Register of Historic Places.
According to a recent press release, the National Register is “the official fist of structures, sites, objects and districts that embody the historical foundations of the nation.”
There are currently more than 60,000 properties fisted in the National Register, including more than 2,300 in Virginia.
Laurel Mills
Historic District
Laurel Mills is located along the Thornton River in Rappahannock County on Route 618 (Laurel Mills Road), between Viewtown and Rock Mills.
It was officially established as a village in 1847, although a sawmill and a gristmill were known to operate there beginning in the late 18th centuiy.
Laurel Mills is important for its cohesive collection of mid-to-late-19thcentury architectural resources associated with the Rappahannock Woolen
