In 2001, the Commonwealth included long-term care in its package of benefits for some 60,000 classified employees, who can also purchase additional insurance through the state employee health care program.
In addition, approximately 47.000 Virginians claimed a state income tax deduction in 2003 to help offset the cost of long-term care insurance premiums, up from approximately 24.000 taxpayers in tax year 2001, the first year the deduction was available.
“The government has an obligation to help our most vulnerable citizens, but for the rest of us, we have an obligation to plan for a safe and secure future,” said Eldon James, executive director of the Virginia Association of the Area Agencies on Aging.
