The book is technical in nature dealing with water systems and sewer planning.
“The best part of the book is that it makes a planning commissioner aware of infrastructure planning,” said Chandler.
Schwartz said that the course will be of great use to him as the town updates its Comprehensive Plan.
“There is a big interdependency between the town council, the architectural review board, the planning commission and the citizens,” remarked Schwartz.
As the town develops the updated Comprehensive Plan, Schwartz looks forward to getting input from the public.
“The planning commission makes decisions based on the feelings of everyone,” Schwartz said, “we have direction on applications, advice on decisions and then make decisions independently as a consensus of citizens and town government.”
Chandler began teaching the course at Virginia Tech 20 years ago, before the Virginia Citizens Planning Association picked up the program.
“We have taught nearly 2,000 people across the state; helping government agencies develop tomorrow today,” said Chandler.
