“And there you go,” he said, successfully breaking off the piece from the rod. “Now it goes into the annealing oven, where it will cook overnight and gradually cool.”
Two decades of work
Kvames works out of the galleiy that he established almost 20 years ago, after buying the piece of property in Sperryville from Pete Estes, now chairman of the Board of Supervisors in Rappahannock County. In addition to the glass works Kvames he sells, other works of art are available.
“This center comprises three businesses,” Kvames explained. “First, there’s the Oldway Art Center, where we have local artists, musicians even a massage therapist, and where we have two music studios.
“Then there’s the Glassworks Gallery, where we sell the pieces we make. And there’s the glass-blowing business.”
Kvaroes enjoys teaching glassblowing classes at the center.
“People can come in with no experience at all and learn to blow glass,” he said. “It’s been very popular. We have students from Warrenton, Culpeper, even Washington D.C.
“People like to learn something new, and this brings them a lot of satisfaction. A lot of people can’t get satisfaction out of their day-to-day jobs, and they want to do something exciting on
