Rappahannock County High School wrestling had its hands full when thf' faced the state-ranked Strasburg Rams last week, falling 47-26.
“I am really proud of these guys,” said Panther coach Eric Spath. “They held their own against a really good team.”
Rappahannock’s Isaac Raney pinned the Rams Robbie Packer in 1:12 to put six on the board for the Panthers in the 152-pound division, followed by a 20-18 minor decision by 171pounder RCHS’ Justin Robinson against Brian Streicek.
Taking the match near completion, 215-pounder E.J. Estes pinned Shane Walker in 4:43 with a headlock, leaving the remainder of the Panther points earned by forfeits by the Rams.
While not putting points on the board for Rappahannock, a head-tohead match-up took place against two state-ranked grapplers, Rappahannock’s Dos Allen and Strasburg’s Jeff Musterman in the 145-pound division.
Currently Allen is ranked sixth, while Musterman is ranked first in the state. Allen survived two near-falls early in the match, taking him into the third period against Musterman.
Musterman chose bottom position to start, getting the 2point reversal which set the tone for the period. Reversal for Allen, reversal for Musterman, reversal for Allen and then an escape for Musterman ended the match, 13-5.
The loss is the first for Allen this season, his record 18-1 with 11 pins.
Also facing a first-ranked grappler for Strasburg was Rappahannock’s Tim Robinson. Robinson, a firstyear freshman faced senior Brandon Holbert.
Holbert has been a stateplacer for the past three years, taking first in the state in A division last year.
Robinson escaped his way into the second period where he was pinned in 2:07 by the Ram’s Holbert.
