Finally, it came down to the cheimpionship round between Patrick Brown of Flint Hill and Abby Whitaker of Front Royal.
The championship round started with three questions, each read eiloud twice by moderator Lori Perry, the 5th and 6th grade geography teacher.
The competitors each wrote their answers down on paper, and at the conclusion of this phase of the round, both students had the same scores, so the competition then shifted to “tie-breaker” questions. After four additional questions had been asked, Patrick Brown was declared the champion of the 2005 Wakefield Country Day School National Geography Bee, with both students receiving a warm round of applause.
Moderator Perry noted that all of the students really seemed to enjoy the exercise, and that the competition had spurred “interest in a subject that is becoming increasingly important, in this 21st. century world of instant communication and shrinking borders.”
Head of school Kathleen Grove added, “anything we can do to foster students’ curiosity about other nations is something we definitely want to encourage here at Wakefield Country Day School. Hopefully a greater sense of international understanding and cooperation will only increase by such exercises.”
