I As part of the long debated drug policy approved at last Tuesday’s meeting, the school board directed superintendent William Bloomer to contact the head 1 of the U.S. Custom Service training i center in Front Royal and request that narcotic detection dogs periodically check RCHS for drugs. The motion read by Robert Eastham emphasized that no prior notice of the random inspections will be given to school board members, administrators or faculty. RCHS principal Dennis / Wingfield is to warn students only that drug dogs will make inspection visits periodically throughout the term.
Over 100 students and parents participating in the fourth annual Wakefield Ski Program enjoyed their first day on the slopes of Bryce Mountain Resort Monday. The six-week course will be held each Monday. It is an elective course to bolster Wakefield’s winter physical education program and is designed to lay the groundwork for a competitive ski team for the school. Students in groups of six receive one and a half hours of ski instruction from professionals and spend the rest of the day practicing learned skills. elementary school faculty celebrated with wild abandon Saturday night after soundly defeating the seventh grade team in a fund raising volleyball game to benefit the annual Williamsburg trip. The teachers came decked out and ready to spike in all the colors of the rainbow—red tights, blue tights, lime green shorts, yellow tshirts, and red, white and blue sweat suits. The seventh graders never had a chance against the likes of Lyn “The Lip” Baines, Susan “Dead Eye” Henry, Becky “The Hawk” Hawkins, Mike “Monster” Connefee, Janet “Red Legs” DeRoo and the “Terrible Twin,s” Cathy and Donna Lowe, just to name a few of the teacher all-stars.

Bob Ryan, weatherman with WRC TV in Washington, D.C., arranged for the local school to be included among the 90 schools that are part of the 4-Winds network of weather stations. The station can call in on the school’s modem and download information directly. The weather station collects information on wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure and rainfall. Students are already noticing the display.
