The property has been continuously used as a commercial apple orchard since 1873, when Charles Burrell Wood planted the first orchard.
The improvements are architecturally significant as a large collection of domestic and agricultural buildings, with the historic resources ranging in date from circa 1785 to 1940.
Considered by the National Park Service as “significant architectural sites,” Laurel Mills and Sunnyside were already listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register, the state’s honorary designation for such historic properties.
