The glass came out in a great, hot glob that carried the color of the heat from the 2,000-degree furnace. Glassblower Eric Kvames twirled it on the end of his pipe, like it was a wad of cotton candy at the fair.
He explained, “This is called ‘the first gather.” I’m going to put a tiny bubble (of air) in it and then get some more.”
Kvames handled the pipe with the skills developed after 31 years of doing the art, blowing a small bubble into the glob of glass and then heading to the furnace — one of three that were fired up and running at the time — to get another bit of glass to keep the project moving forward.
“This cools very quickly. This is already solid,” Kvames said, hitting the glass on his pipe with a piece of
