When two-year Washington resident Gary Schwartz became involved with the town planning commission, the last thing he expected was to become chairman.
However, Schwartz feels that in a small town, everyone must be a part of the solution. Schwartz quickly became an involved resident of the Town of Washington.
In an attempt to learn more about his new post, Schwartz volunteered to enroll in the Virginia Certified Planning Program, a 10-week course offered by the Virginia Citizens Planning Association — and earning certification in the course.
Back to school
Once the town endorsed his participation, Schwartz headed to Richmond for his first two days of class.
“The class provides a comprehensive overview of a planning commission, including community planning, the legal foundation of planning and zoning and the duties of a planning commissioner,” said Michael Chandler, director of education with the association.
The following nine weeks, Schwartz had several texts to read, including Planning the Built Environment by Larz T. , Anderson.
