All dressed up and no place to go — that’s the situation which Miss Annie Miller Almond of Washington and Mrs. James E. Settle, Flint Hill, found themselves in last week. They were scheduled to embark Wednesday on a 10-day Caribbean cruise abroad the Moore-McCormick line’s S.S. Argentina. Sailing of the Argentina was canceled by the longshoreman’s dock strike. Although the vessel had already been stocked with supplies and there was the possibility that passengers might carry their own luggage aboard, a last minute meeting of the union prohibited anyone crossing the picket line, so departure was canceled indefinitely. Not to be completely outdone, Miss Almond and Mrs. Settle did have the opportunity to go aboard the Argentina for a tour of the ship and to meet the crew. They also toured a bit of New York and were dinner guests of Capt. and Mrs. C. G. Reid, alternate skipper of the vessel, before returning home. Capt. Reid is a former resident of Rappahannock.
On Sunday, Jan. 17, the Rev. Charles F. Glaerizer of Bromfield Parish and the Rev. James Grimmer, with charges in Huntly, Flint Hill, Washington and Sperryville exchanged pulpits. Mr. Glaenzer conducted services at the Washington and Sperryville • Methodist Churches and Mr. Grimmer preached the sermon at Trinity Episcopal church.
Additional book shelves are being constructed to accommodate the goodly number of books having been acquired by the Rappahannock Library. Other construction is being done this week as well. The balcony floor is being finished to provide extra room for books and tentative plans call for an area for quiet reading and research. The work is being done by George W. Hawkins of Sperryville.
The Skyline Ski Area was a buzz of activity this weekend as nearly 1,700 people visited. Miss Carolyn Gates Turner of Washington and Richmond and a group of friends from Richmond had a pleasant day on the slopes. Eugene Burke of Washington enjoyed time off from his work with the highway department to help out at the slopes. Vince Cary ran the food concession at the ski lodge, with the help of Mrs. Frederick Jenkins, Mrs. Rena Mae Pullen, and Mrs. Janie Pullen.
