Having been active in Virginia environmental public affairs for 32 years, Washington resident Elizabeth Haskell has been chosen as the 2005 Outstanding Virginian by the General Assembly.
Haskell served as Virginia’s Secretary of Natural Resources from 1990-1994, directing Virginia’s environmental, conservation and historic resource programs.
The guidelines for this prestigious award include extraordinary achievements, inspiring leadership and civic service.
The award originated with House Joint Resolution No. 165, which was passed in the Virginia General Assembly in 1984. The bill designated the second Saturday in May as “Outstanding Virginian Day,” with the celebration to be held at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Front Royal.
The announcement was made at the Virginia General Assembly on Feb. 9.
