Colonial Downs and the Virginia chapter of they Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association have jointly requested that the Virginia Racing Commission approve 40 days of live racing at Colonial Downs in 2005. The request is broken down into two meets with 37 days with average daily purses of $200,000, from June 17 through August 6, and a three day Turf Festival over the Labor Day weekend. The Festival will have daily purses of $300,000 and a new stakes race for 3-year-olds — the $250,000 Colonial Turf Cup.
The three day fall Turf Festival will debut the Grand Slam of Grass for 3-year-olds. Colonial has agreed to pay a $2 million bonus to the horse that wins the grade 3 $500,000 Virginia Derby, either the grade
