Hogben rode with trainer Robin Dickin in Stratford after completion, where she met her now-fiance Xavier Aizpuru, now also riding on Virginias circuit. Hogben soon took an offer from Clarke-based trainer Jimmy Day for “a working holiday. I just never left,” she said with a laugh.
Hogben said that, mostly, her knowledge of racing skills and proper position were products of the horses she has ridden. “Jimmy put me on some campaigners — Sir Howard, Seek, Golden Rule. You really learn to ride from those horses. I learned to keep my hands down, quiet, how to stay back and balanced.
“Also, we talk about riding a lot, in the jockeys room between races. You watch and you learn.”
