to go to an Ivy League school and traveling to the eastern part pf the United States provided her an opportunity to see more of the country.
Haskell graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 with a bachelors degree in political science.
“I was always interested in governmental work,” Haskell said of her early internship in Philadelphia, Pa.
Haskell was a summer intern for U.S. Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson (DWashington) for three years.
“He was a statesman, a real role model for me,” remembered Haskell of the senator, “He picked his priorities carefully.”
Haskell served as a legislative assistant to House Rep. Richard White (DTexas), prior to serving as legislative assistant to the first Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Interior Department for Water Pollution Control.
After moving to Virginia in 1972, Haskell was appointed to the State Air Pollution Control Board by Gov. Lin wood Holton.
She served on the board for 16 years, prior to operating a consulting firm that worked with federal and state environmental agencies on policies and organizations.
Life of service
Currently, Haskell is a member of the board for the Corporation of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest.
Poplar Forest was Jefferson’s retreat home in Bedford, Va. and is under restoration by the corporation.
