Their time is kept secret until all pairs have completed the course. The pair closest to the preset time is the winner. The trick is to guess the pace that a particular hunt uses when setting the time, but the operative word here is guess — many a pair has hustled over a course for a hunt with a reputation for speed, only to find their time is too fast.

The reverse is also truealthough refusals and falls are not penalized, they tend to slow the pair down. Occasionally a pair going too fast is slowed down by a refusal — and wins.
