• Furlong: one-eighth of a mile, 220 yards or 660 feet. The original definition was said to have come from the distance of a plowed field in English crosscountry riding, referred to as a “furrow long.”
• Going: a term used to indicate the nature of the footing. If the going is deep, then the footing is very muddy or wet. Most trainers like the going to be closer to firm with a little yield.
• Homestretch: the section of the course between the last fence and the finish line.
• Handicap: a race in which the horses are assigned different amounts of weights to cany, according to their respective abilities.
