Generally when we think of or read newspapers from the past we think of flowery obituaries, poetry and long dull stories. Well, that is not always the case. The writers in the earlier papers did have a sense of humor and their hands were not tied by political correctness.
Rappahannock County has had two newspapers that we are familiar with, “The Blue Ridge Guide” and the “Rappahannock News.” However, two adjoining comity papers, “The Culpeper Exponent” and “The Front Royal Record” both had columns devoted to news from Rappahannock County.
The Rappahannock Historical Society is fortunate to have scrapbooks of clippings, which were kept by local ladies, and research many times necessitates looking at old newspapers.
Recently, while doing research in Culpeper, Wayne Baldwin ran across the following humorous account dated February 11, 1905. It read:
