“It’s a requirement that the kid must have hunted on that pony,” Alcock explained. “They don’t have to own it, but they do have to have hunted it. Safety is our number one issue. And we want the kid to be able to ride the pony they hunt in these races, the pony that can go in the field master chase one weekend and in a horse show the next.”
In a field master chase, the “field” — the contestants — follow a field master around a course of jumps at the race course at a hunting pace. Riders must be in control of their mounts and stay behind the master as in the hunt field. After the last jump, riders halt their horses and the field master releases them to race to the finish. While the entire course may be two miles, the distance actually raced is only about a quarter mile.
