Sign of the times
During the last few weeks, identity theft has
taken on a new meaning in Rappahannock
County. To date, three signs have been stolen from properties near Flint Hill.
Caledonia Farms, Vista Hermosa and Fiddler’s Green are currently without their familiar signage and the Sheriff’s Office is anxious to ferret out the perpetrators.
The citizens of this county are proud of what they have and own and, for many, that includes signature signage welcoming guests and pinpointing their particular place on the Rappahannock horizon.
While the county is fortunate that it isn’t plagued by the more familiar mail box bashing that can happen in suburban communities, the theft of these signs goes against the characteristic charm and civility that has marked this area.
Hanging a beautiful, hand-craftea sign out in the open is a statement of not only proud ownership but trust in the place you live.
Signs such as these speak louder than their owner’s names or the name of the farm. They tell a deeper story about who hung them there, of that person’s appreciation of excellent craftsmanship and an artform that dates back centuries.
Stealing road signs off of major highways is often an initiation rite into a college fraternity and is often viewed as a prankish but harmless rite of passage —< only if you don’t get caught.
Stealing signs from rural homes is an invasion of privacy, a cruel intrusion into that person’s sanctuary and an act that shows little regard and respect for not only those specifically targeted but for all of us that call those victims friends and neighbors.
Sheriff Larry Sherertz has stated that he will accept information in confidence that could lead to the arrests of the person or persons responsible for these acts.
Rappahannock County has a reputation statewide for having one of the, if not the lowest, crime rates.
Let’s keep in that way.
