Although npt a household name today, James A. “Jimmy” Bland in the late 1800s was considered the greatest Black composer of American folk songs for minstrel shows of his time, much like his better-known contemporary, Stephen C. Foster. Both wrote famous songs that found their way into Americana folklore and music. Although he wrote over 700 compositions, James Bland’s best-known song remains Virginia’s official state
