Our favorite owl is the little screech owl. These owls are among the most strictly nocturnal, but they can sometimes be seen in the daytime sunning themselves in cavity openings.
There are two color morphs, gray and red, each with ear tufts and strongly barred under parts. We hear our favorite owl most often just before dawn, but males are heard frequently just after sunset. Both males and females give a descending whinny or trill, which is a delight to hear.
