Because they are interchangeable and identical, they are also useful for scientific study, by keeping a lot of the variables in classroom growing experiments identical, whether here, in El Salvador or in Ghana.
Scheuerlein attended a presentation in late August where Katy Warner, president of the American Horticultural Society, and Robert Patterson, senior liaison officer for the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization, shared information with school officials about “The Growing Connection” - a program developed for middle school students across the world where students learn to grow food plants using a uniform sustainable growing system.'
While flowers are pretty, getting food out of gardens teaches children about agriculture and hopefully nurtures an appreciation for growing their own food and the land that is required to do so.
Essentially little portable gardens, each box is being put together, planted and maintained by a team, \yho will chart the progress of their various crops over the course of the fall. Students will be able to compare growth and productivity rates with different crops, watering levels and so on.
As a bonus, they will get some fresh produce in the bargain.
