Homer: The 41-year-old Monkton, Md., native threaded another first-time starter, Unexplainable, through traffic early, to lead by the race’s midpoint and extend the winning margin to five lengths by the wire.
“His jumping’s what won it,” Homer said of the 9-yearold gray son of El Prado. “He was quick, like a cat, jumping and turning, getting his feet.”
Murphy’s result? Same fence as Homer in the prior race, a fall after his mount — another first-time starter — took a stab at the uphill jump.
The pair renewed their rivalry two races later in the six-furlong turf dash. Murphy made his move early aboard Marine, edging away for a virtually unchallenged, fivelength score.
Homer’s result? Safe home, but well back in fifth place.
