Watermelons burst out of their raised beds. Heirloom lemon cucumbers trail into the neatly mulched aisles. Cherokee purple tomatoes, Incan com, garlic, onions, leeks, peas, potatoes, and beans are just Some of the delicious vegetables that Nicole Gallihugh, summer intern with the Farm-to-Table program, has been harvesting to enjoy and to donate to the Rappahannock County Senior Nutrition Center this summer.
Nicole, a former horticulture student, hopes to go to Lord Fairfax Community College to study landscaping after she finishes high school with the class of 2006. The summer internship has given Nicole an opportunity to learn the weekly rhythms of the garden, including seeding, weeding, harvesting, and delivering vegetables. Nicole has also been researching Lord Fairfax Community College’s esteemed horticulture program.
