By Richard Lyres Special to the Rappahannock News The tragedy that struck the Gulf Coast states from the winds and water of Hurricane Katrina has prompted a continuing and heartfelt effort by many committed Rappahannock citizens to reach out and help their neighbors in the South. The “Rappahannock Samaritans,” as the coalition of religious and secular organizations and individuals is being called, held its latest fundraising event on Saturday evening at the Washington Fire Hall. Nearly $2,800 was raised from the event. Braving drenching rain in our own area, some 75 people attended a covered dish dinner to raise needed funds and awareness of the overwhelming nature of the problem: providing assistance for tens of thousands of increasingly depressed people who are both homeless and job-less.
