On September 29, the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel, Hearthstone School celebrated Michaelmas. The feast of St. Michael and All Angels (or Michaelmas) falls around the autumnal equinox, which marks the period when the nights begin getting longer and the earth begins to slow and cool with the approach of winter. During the Middle Ages, Michaelmas was a great religious feast and many popular traditions grew up around the day, which coincided with the harvest in much of Western Europe. Michaelmas was a time for celebrating light and growth and the summer season that was coming to an end.
St. Michael came to be seen as the protector against the forces of the dark, and became very popular in the Middle Ages. It was during this time that St. George and the Dragon became a popular story. The dragon represented darkness and evil, and St. George was the earthly representation of St. Michael.
