When Wellemeyer and Henderson first arrived in Mississippi, most services, stores, schools and infrastructure were shut down. Many roads were impassable, with mud, fallen trees and debris from wrecked homes covering them. Electricity was not working in most areas. They saw a great deal of progress in the two weeks they spent working on reconstruction efforts. By the time they left, electricity had been restored to some of the area, approximately 30 trailers and porta-johns had been delivered for temporary school facilities, rebuilding of the school had commenced and crews were cleaning debris from roads and neighborhoods.
