selves and their families. Suddenly, in one fell swoop, all this was taken away from them, including homes, loved ones, precious memories, and a livelihood. In their counseling sessions, survivors told Adolfi of their fears and sheer exasperation of survival—working with FEMA and insurance adjusters, trying to find food and shelter, and in the end, trying to adjust to communal living—sometimes 15 to a house.
Bill Jarrett of Flint Hill, who traveled with Jim Gannon and Dave Kerr, to investigate the needs in the Bay St. Louis area of Mississippi, reported on efforts by St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Little Washington to “adopt” St. Ann’s parish. This sister church was largely destroyed and needs help with rebuilding and assistance for their homeless parishioners. Jarrett’s group also witnessed unspeakable devastation and human suffering and likened it to a war zone. Every family they met had a sad and compelling story. Yet there was faith and hope that these resilient people can recover and rebuild their fives.
