Lights out for’sex offenders
The Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department and the Virginia State Police participated in Operation Porch Lights Out this Halloween. The multi-state initiative prevents registered sex offenders from having their porch lights on or leaving their homes between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. on the night of Halloween. In addition to their porches being dark, registered sex offenders are also prohibited from displaying Jack O’ Lanterns of giving out candy under the law.
“We’re working in conjunction with probation and parole officers,” said Major Chris Williams of the RCSD. State troopers and Rappahannock deputies will be checking the residences of registered sex offenders in Rappahannock County throughout the prescribed hours. Failure to comply with Operation Porch Lights Out could result in parole violations and jail time for affected individuals. “We just want the community to know that we’re doing our part to keep Halloween safe,” said Williams.
