The Theatre

On Saturday, November 12 the popular classic jazz band known as the Federal Jazz Commission returns to the Theatre at Washington, Virginia with New Orleans and Dixieland style music. The concert begins at 8 p.m.
The band’s principal focus is on music of the 1920s, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong. Its repertoire includes rags, stomps, marches, blues, cakewalks and more. Leader Marty Frankel, who plays the cornet, has been with the band since 1978, just two years after its inception. Marty is joined by fellow members of the FJC Henning Hoehne, who plays clarinet and sax, trombonist Steve Welch, bassist Tom Gray, and drummer Sonny McGowan.
Despite its inspired name, the Federal Jazz Commission lacks any affiliation with the federal government. It has performed for most of the major institutions in Washington, D.C., including the White House, the Congress, the Supreme Court, the Smithsonian Institution, the Kennedy Center and several foreign embassies. The FJC also performs at jazz festivals, such as the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic in Clearwater Beach, Florida, where it will be going shortly after performing in Little Washington at the Theatre.
Speaking for the Federal Jazz Commission, Mary Frankel said, “we’re very pleased to have been invited back for our third visit to the Theatre. Of the many places where we’ve performed, the Theatre remains one of our favorites. The setting is perfect for our music, and the enthusiasm of the audience makes it a special occasion for us.”
