Subscription spirits
Flint Hill resident Robert Welch stopped in the
paper on a recent Thursday morning. It was a
beautiful day. He was carrying an issue of the Rappahannock News and wanted to speak to someone personally about his concern.
The paper has been going to his aunt, Viola Jackson, in Highland Springs, Virginia which is near Richmond.
“I don’t want it, “ he said. “I already get one and I don't need this one.”
Viola Jackson, Welch’s aunt, died nearly two years ago. When she passed on, Welch phoned the paper and stopped her subscription.
‘‘Everything was fine until a couple of months ago,” continued Welch. “Then the paper started arriving again."
“I’m not being charged for it but there’s no reason for it to keep coming.”
I apologized that the paper was being sent to a dead woman and explained to Mr. Welch about the series of corporate ladders that circulation requests and challenges go through and that I would certainly look into this matter.
We continued chatting and I was glad for the opportunity to meet Robeit Welch and talk about his aunt and how she was born and raised near Huntly.
When he left, we were both laughing about the matter.
“Well, she always liked the paper,” he said. “Maybe she just wanted to start getting it again.”
