Edwards sentencing

Former local girl’s basketball coach Waymond James Edwards Jr. will be sentenced in the Rappahannock County Circuit court on November 3 at 9:00 a.m.. Edwards plead guilty to avfelony charge of Taking Indecent Liberties with a Child while in a Custodial Relationship and three counts each of misdemeanor Sexual Abuse and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor on Oct. 21.

He could face up to eleven years in prison, which would be added to the year in prison he already faces for crimes committed in Fauquier County.

According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, Edwards is also facing similar charges in Roanoke for incidents alleged to have occurred there between Edwards and one of the victims from Rappahannock County while on a basketball trip.

4:00 a.m. Sunday, October 30, Alex Judson Hammer, of Amissville, fell asleep while driving his black 2002 Chevrolet S-10 on US-211. The 19-year-old’s truck drifted off the right side of the road, causing Hammer to awaken and over correct.

The truck ran off the road a second time and struck an embankment, launching the vehicle into the air. The vehicle struck a tree before landing on its driver side, facing westbound 211.

When State Trooper Derrick Mauck responded to the scene of the accident, Hammer was not present at the scene or at his residence.

He was not located until he turned himself in to the State Police at 8:30 a.m. and he was then charged with Failure to Maintain Control by Trooper Mauck. Hammer sustained only minor injuries. The S-10 was totaled.

5:48 a.m. October 29, Sunday Deputy Gary Jenkins witnessed a vehicle driving in the wrong direction on US211 near the intersection with Schoolhouse.

Shelley Jo Oden, 29, of Sperryville was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
