INSCRIPTIONS Genealogists may take particular interest in the tombstones found in Jewish cemeteries. Not only do their Hebrew inscriptions contain the date of death and, sometimes, the deceased's age or date of birth, but they also are likely to include the name of the deceased’s father. This information enables interested parties to go back a generation. The dates inscribed on Hebrew headstones are representative of the Jewish calendar, which starts its year one with the Creation of the World. This was probably calculated by the patriarch Hillel II, who arrived at the age of the world by computing the literal ages of biblical characters and other biblical events to draw up a Calendar that begins 3,760 years before the Christian calendar.
