The Waldorf Method of education was created by Rudolf Steiner in Stuttgart, Germany in 1919. Steiner developed this method at the request of Emil Molt, the director of the WaldorfAstoria Cigarette Company, who wanted to educate children in a way that would prevent another catastrophe like World War I. Steiner developed an educational system for Molt that would educate and nurture all dimensions of the human being - physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral. For Steiner, the purpose of education was not to simply instill knowledge, but to educate the whole human being. In Waldorf education, music, art and handcrafts are as important as reading, writing and arithmetic. Each day includes activities for the hands, body and heart as well as the head. Steiner summarized the task of education as “Accept the children with reverence, educate them with love, and send them forth in freedom.”
