some form of “circle time.” For younger students, this includes reciting verses along with rhythmic clapping, skipping and movements that incorporate counting and other mathematics with language and memory skills. Older students start the day with physical movement and reciting poetry, either original or a favorite author. Students then focus on academics during their main lesson block: mathematics, language arts, science and histoiy. Afternoons are spent in enrichment classes: knitting, sculpture, watercolor, recorder, yoga and Spanish for younger grades, and drama, art, music, pottery, photography, Spanish and handcrafts for older grades. Then follow classes in cooperative games, physical education and yoga. The day is then closed with another circle.
On Mondays, the entire school along with parents and friends comes together for Sufi Dancing, or Dances of Universal Peace where, through dance and song, students focus on world peace, love and other virtues. It is also a way for the school week to start with a feeling of community for all.
Nursery-Kindergarten at Hearthstone is a very special place. Taught by Kitty Keyser, who is a certified Waldorf teacher, the kindergarten class is a wonderful experience for children.
