Maizel’s estate in Castleton, where a small school was opened in 1996. It soon outgrew this location and began its search for a new, permanent home. The former Country Manor Gift Shop site on Route 211 at the eastern edge of the Shenandoah National Park proved to be the perfect location for the school, and was purchased from the Swindlers, a local Rappahannock County family, in 2000.

The first building to be renovated was the lower school building, which houses the Nursery-Kindergarten, and First and Second Grade classrooms. A pottery studio resides behind the lower school building, and includes areas for sculpture and glazing as well as two electric pottery wheels.

Renovations to the upper floor of the larger building were completed in 2003, which now houses the large Community Room (used for school events in addition to being rented for community and educational events) as well as several therapy offices, a spa and a specialty gift store.

Most recently, the lower level of the main building was completed in late 2005, and includes administrative offices, classrooms, a library, music room, arts and crafts room, photography lab and room for the school’s pottery kilns. What’s a typical day like at Hearthstone
