resources insufficient to sustain the population became coupled with bitterness from forced displacement of mountain residents, unfair compensation for ‘taken’ lands, and partial annihilation of another entire culture. One cannot even begin to consider the many ramifications of these matters on the old timers and their descendents in a brief overview like this. Even today, our major county issues still revolve about the land as pressure from nearby counties, land values, and land uses create tensions for all of us, the been-heres, the come-heres, and the yet to come. And as always, the primary winners are... the lawyers.
If there are a million stories in the naked city, then there are at least many thousands of important ones in these hills around us. Some relate directly to the l§md, many others to individuals and families that have loved the land. These tales will appear in coming installments. Stay tuned!
