more than one host? Why such different hosts? What happens if the alternate host disappears?
It turns out not all rusts require multiple hosts. One of the most common single-host rusts we can see in the county is the May-apple rust, Puccinia podophylli. It forms frizzy, bright orange growths on the surface of May-apple leaves in the springtime. They make only one kind of spore that transmits the fungus from one May-apple to another without using an alternate host. Simplifying the life cycle seems sensible to us. Why don’t all rusts do this?
