At Hearthstone, as in the Waldorf Method, children create their own “main lesson” books, which incorporate what they have experienced in class and learned in each subject through writing and artistic expression, rather than learning from standardized textbooks. This policy stems from the proven conviction that children will retain more when learning is active and incorporates the full experience of all the senses. A Mathematics lesson book includes both mathematical calculations as well as geometric drawings. A Language lesson book includes both written stories and lessons and accompanying illustrations.
Art and craft play a fundamental role in much of the education in Waldorf and at Hearthstone. Kindergartners begin painting soft pastel creations that help to develop coordination and support right-left brain growth. Beeswax sculpture fosters dexterity and imagination. Knitting supports growing dexterity, as does pottery, woodworking and sewing. Drawings are included in main lesson books to help illustrate the subject under study. Watercolor and form drawing are utilized in lower grades as meditative practices to quiet the mind, as well as part of academic study. Painting geometric patterns is part of mathematics classes.
Lynn Boyer-Griffin, parent of a 6th grader at Hearthstone, said, “We wanted a creative, innovative outlet for our child’s education, and Hearthstone fit it to a tee.” They are very pleased with the education their son receives at Hearthstone,
