Henri Matisse is making his Rappahannock debut this weekend in Washington, VA.
This collection, entitled “The Last Works of Matisse: 1950-1954” is displayed for the first time in Rappahannock County at R. H. Ballard Art, Rug & Home, from April 22 - May 14, at 307 Main Street in Historic Washington, VA. A gallery reception will be held on Sunday, April 23, 3pm-6pm, and the public is invited.
Matisse’s superb images of shape and color were first published shortly after the artist’s death in 1954. Mourlot, the major printer in Paris of original lithographic works, printed them under Matisse’s close supervision. They were published for Teriade of Verve in 1958.
Without a doubt, Henri Matisse is one of a handful of the real giants of modem art, as we know it. He is considered “The Master of Color”, but also is a master of shape, line, and composition, leading the way to many movements of art in the 20th century.
