transpired was the notion of private land ownership that the new settlers brought with them. Those were the days, of course, when kings had (or believed they had) nearly divine rights to everything up to and including title to, by simple declaration, all or parts of entire continents. In the old countries of Europe, kings and their pals owned most of the land and there was little opportunity for common folk to ever even aspire to acquire real property. Thus much of the impetus for migration to the New World resulted from the opportunities it presented for land acquisition by the have-nots.
