No one was home when Janet and
Teny Robey’s dream house
caught fire Friday afternoon and burned to the ground.
“It’s a firefighter’s worst fear,” said Terry Robey, a volunteer for the Washington Fire Department, “that one day something like this would happen to you and your own.”
A passerby was the first to notice the flames from the home on Hope Hill road near Castleton and alerted area dispatchers at about 1:33 p.m. a When firefighters arrived at the scene, however, it was too late to stop the disaster.
“When we arrived we saw the two story family house fully engulfed in flames,” said Wayne Dodson, the incident commander from the Amissville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company.
Amissville firefighters were the first responders to the blaze while Washington, Sperryville, and members of the Castleton fire departments followed shortly afterwards.
Dodson said it was too late to fight the flames inside; subsequent efforts were mostly defensive, spraying the exterior of the house with hand lines to contain the fire. All crews remained 3040 feet from the fire due to the intense heat.
“It was one of the hottest fires that we have had in a while,” Dodson added.
