On Sunday, April 15 at 4 in the afternoon, the Theatre at Washington, Virginia presents the Orkis-Hardy Duo (from the Kennedy Center Chamber Players). Pianist Lambert Orkis and cellist David Hardy will play the first of two concerts of Beethoven's Complete Sonatas and Variations for Piano and Cello.
Lambert Orkis writes, "The three sets of variations and five sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven for Piano and Cello are a mini-cycle that reveals his genius both as a creator and as an entrepreneur. With this inspired music, the early works of which were written to impress King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, Beethoven introduces into the world a new musical genre featuring the cello, demonstrates his daring as a composer, and flaunts his skill as piano virtuoso."
King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia was himself a cellist. Both as composer and as a pianist, Beethoven presented the king with sonatas for piano and cello. Beethoven was joined by the famed cellist Duport who owned what became known as the "Duport" Stradivarius cello.
Orkis and Hardy will play, in the upcoming concert, two sonatas for piano and cello and two sets of variations for piano and cello from Mozart's opera "Die Zauberflote". The date of the second concert, which
