Soil Management Many, if not most, landscape plant disorders are caused or influenced by soil and root problems. Much information about native soils can be obtained from soil surveys published from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. However, soils in urban areas are usually disturbed and highly variable. Sampling is the key to understanding soil conditions. Soil analysis should be undertaken prior to planting to determine soil preparation needs and again at periodic intervals to serve as a basis for fertilization programs. Regarding plants in poor health, fertilization recommendations always should be on analysis.
