start being the novice hurdle at the 2003 Cheltenham Festival.

In the day's other racing, Clarke County based trainer Jimmy Day saddled two winners, Leaves of Autumn in the Virginia-bred flat, and Dixie Giggle in the maiden. Both runners are owned by Upperville’s Bruce Smart.

Of the innovative “joint meet” race day, Rappahannock Hunt master Oliver Brown was pleased with the working model. “The EHV scare was unfortunate, but, honestly, it may have been a blessing in disguise,” Brown said. “There are so many meets on the calendar as it is. This way everybody got to run both nobody was stretched too thin.”

“We made the best of a bad situation,” said Blue Ridge races chairman Michael Hoffman. “What we did (combining the races for a single make-up date) was not only innovative but very successful for both hunt clubs.

“Everything was easier to do together,” Hoffman added, saying that the army of volunteers from both hunts to assist in setting up the course, organizing parking spaces, selling ads and more made for a sense of camaraderie that spanned county lines.

“I know we both agree that we’re lucky in Virginia to have Will O’Keefe to look after the sport,” Brown said. Hoffman added that it was O’Keefe, director of the Virginia Steeplechase Association Central Entry office in Leesburg, who helped broker the situation of placing the Rappahannock-Blue Ridge meet on the Orange County Hunt races weekend. “It required cooperation from everybody,” Hoffman said.
